Natural Hazards

Natural Process: A type of physical, chemical or biological occurrence that can only become dangerous when humans are in its path.
(ex. Internal forces include earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, and external forces include floods and landslides).

Natural Hazard: Natural process or occurrence where there is possible danger to human existence and property.

Disasters vs. Catastrophes
Disaster: A hazardous event that happens in a small space and a short time.
To qualify as natural disaster, it must feature one of these:
  • 10 or more humans killed
  • 100 or more humans affected (injury or loss of property)
  • Declared state of emergency
  • Requested international assistance
Catastrophe: enormous disaster that involve large money and time to recuperate. (ex. Hurricanes).
